Join Sher on A Deeper Journey into India’s remarkable impact on the West with Philip Goldberg, author of American Veda.
Philip Goldberg, author, public speaker and ordained interfaith minister, has been studying the world’s spiritual traditions for more than forty years, as a practitioner, teacher and author, with a particular emphasis on Hinduism, Vedanta, and Yoga. After teaching Transcendental Meditation and helping to establish Maharishi International University in the 1970s, he became a professional writer and speaker. He is the author or co-author of 19 nonfiction books and one novel, and has penned numerous essays for magazines and websites.
His nonfiction books include:
– THE TM PROGRAM: The Way to Fulfillment (Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1976)
– THE INTUITIVE EDGE: Understanding and Developing Intuition (Tarcher/Penguin, 1983)
– EXECUTIVE HEALTH (McGraw‑Hill, 1978)
– GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY: Overcoming Self‑Defeating Behavior (Perigee, 1996)
– MAKING PEACE WITH GOD (Tarcher/Penguin, 2002)
– ROADSIGNS ON THE SPIRITUAL PATH: Living at the Heart of Paradox (Sentient, 2006)
– AMERICAN VEDA: From Emerson and the Beatles to Yoga and Meditation, How Indian Spirituality Changed the West (Harmony/Crown, 2010)
His most recent book, American Veda, was named one of the top ten religion books of the year by both Huffington Post and the American Library Association. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly said: “This book fills a void: scholars have mined the subject of Indian spiritual philosophy, but mostly for the academy … Goldberg gets it.”
He is currently working on a major biography of the spiritual mastter Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi.
A skilled public speaker and workshop leader, Phil has lectured and taught throughout North America, India and elsewhere, and has been interviewed on a variety of radio and television programs. In recent years, he has presented at universities (e.g., Harvard, U. Michigan, Princeton, Brown, UC Berkeley); yoga centers (Kripalu, Integral Yoga Institute, etc.); academic conferences (American Academy of Religion, Dharma Academy of North America); non-academic conferences (Yoga Alliance, International Association of Yoga Therapists); houses of worship (Hindu temples, Christian churches, nondenominational spiritual centers such as Unity and Religious Science); numerous bookstores, festivals, and other public events.
A published novelist and a screenwriter as well, he is a member of both the Writers Guild of America and the Authors Guild. He blogs regularly on religion, yoga and spirituality on the Spirituality & Health and Huffington Post, and he is the co-host of the podcast Spirit Matters, which features interviews with important spiritual leaders and teachers.
